Your Privacy

Your survey responses will be combined with others' responses before they are analyzed. Your contact information will only be used to contact you for follow up about the survey.

Your responses are being collected to help the Ministry of Transportation identify travel patterns in the Greater Golden Horseshoe and surrounding areas, in accordance with the Ministry's traffic planning and road safety mandate under provincial legislation. Responses must be collected first in identifiable form for survey validation purposes, but will then have all identifiers securely removed, and will not be held by the Ministry at any time in identifiable form.

Names, addresses, and phone numbers are destroyed at the conclusion of the survey's data collection phase and before responses are received by the Ministry or its funding partners. For more information please refer to the Privacy Statement.



General Information

The TTS is a voluntary household travel survey that collects information about daily travel. Survey participants are asked about each member of their household's (5 years of age or older) travel on the previous weekday.

The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario conducts this survey every five years and the information collected is used to support planning for transportation infrastructure and services.

Yes, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario mailed letters to randomly selected households to invite them to participate in the survey either online or by telephone. The survey invitation letter is signed by the Deputy Minister of Transportation. The survey is funded by a total of 25 local, regional, provincial and transit operating agencies.

If you did not receive an invitation in the mail, you can still participate in this survey by clicking the "Generate" button to receive your access code. Use this access code to log in and complete your survey.

The survey is co-funded by the Cities of Barrie, Brantford, Guelph, Hamilton, Orillia, Peterborough and Toronto; the Counties of Brant, Dufferin, Grey, Northumberland, Peterborough, Simcoe and Wellington; the Regional Municipalities of Durham, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York; The Town of The Blue Mountains and the Town of Orangeville; as well as by Metrolinx, the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, and the Toronto Transit Commission.

Canada-based research firm R. A. Malatest & Associates Ltd. will conduct the survey on behalf of the participating government agencies.

Data collection for the TTS is split into two phases (Phase 1 occurred in the Fall of 2022), with the second phase beginning in the Spring of 2023. If you received an invitation and completed the survey in Fall 2022, you will not be contacted again in Spring 2023.

The TTS has been conducted every five years since 1986. The research helps local and regional governments, as well as the province and its agencies, make transportation planning and investment decisions. The latest cycle of the TTS was originally scheduled for 2021. Due to the impact of the pandemic on daily travel patterns, the full survey was postponed to the Fall of 2023 and Spring 2023. A pilot study conducted in early 2023 that helped us assess the stability of travel patterns during the pandemic. The pilot survey results, along with the results of the full survey, will also help us to better understand long term trends in travel patterns throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.



About Participating

Participation in the survey is voluntary.

While voluntary, your participation is important. The few minutes you take to participate will have a big impact by representing the travel choices and travel patterns for residents in your area.

The survey will collect information about your household, members of the household, and trips they made during the previous weekday.

Yes, residents who do not travel are just as important as those that do. Your survey answers will help build a snapshot of the travel patterns of the population as a whole, including people who did not travel on the day for which travel information is being provided. Your participation will ensure the survey reflects the make-up of the general population.

These questions will help us understand whether we have surveyed a representative sample of the entire population. The survey will help us better understand the different transportation needs and travel patterns of all residents of our region, and whether access to transportation is equitable for all population groups. These questions, like other questions on the survey, are entirely voluntary.

The information on travel patterns will help planners better understand residents' current transportation choices and trip purposes. Your responses will be combined with other responses in your area and the results will be used to help plan transportation infrastructure and services in communities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) and surrounding areas to better accommodate residents' needs.

The survey area includes the Cities of Barrie, Brantford, Guelph, Hamilton, Kawartha Lakes, Orillia, Peterborough and Toronto; the Counties of Brant, Dufferin, Grey, Northumberland, Peterborough, Simcoe and Wellington; the Regional Municipalities of Durham, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and York; and The Town of The Blue Mountains and the Town of Orangeville.

Over the phone, the interview should take about 10 - 20 minutes. The survey may be a bit longer for larger households.

Online, the survey takes 15 to 20 minutes or more depending on your household size and number of trips.

Yes. To make an appointment to be interviewed please phone 1-877-216-7786. Please leave a voicemail that includes the date and time as well as your secure access code. If you received a survey invitation in the mail, you access code can be found at the top of the letter. If you did not receive a letter in the mail and generated your access code by clicking "Generate", please keep a record of this access code and have it on hand when you call.

Yes. If you have received a survey invitation in the mail, simply click on the Survey Login button anywhere on this website and enter your access code found at the top of your letter.

The online survey has been developed to work on most web browsers on personal computers, tablets, and mobile devices. The survey does include some features such as Google Maps which may be more challenging to navigate using only a keyboard (if not using a mouse or touchscreen).

If you have difficulty completing the survey online, please email info@tts2023.ca or call 1-877-216-7786 for assistance, to complete the survey over the phone, or for accommodation with alternate methods of completing the survey.

The surveys can be completed online and by phone in both English and French.

If you have received a survey invitation and cannot do the survey in English or French, please call us at 1-877-216-7786 to complete the survey over the phone with one of our surveyors in another language.

You can participate in two ways:

  1. Online: You may choose to fill out the survey online by logging in on the home page using the secure access code provided on the letter you received. If you did not receive an access code in the mail you can generate one by clicking the "Generate" button. Use this access code to log in and complete the survey online. If you begin the survey online and require assistance, we also provide phone-in support between 9 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays at 1-877-216-7786. Please make sure to have your access code on hand.
  2. Phone: You may also choose to give us a call at 1-877-216-7786 during those same hours and one of our professional interviewers will be happy to conduct the survey with you over the telephone. Please make sure to have your access code on hand.

Please note, our survey interviewers may call selected households, who have not already completed the survey, on weeknights between 5 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. We will only be calling households with a listed phone number from the white pages that was matched to the address we have on file. If you received a letter inviting you to participate, we would encourage you to do the survey online or please call us, in case we cannot call you.
